Home remodeling might be the one of the hottest niches on social media. There are thousands of accounts dedicated to showing “before and after” DIY videos. And let’s face it, a lot of those crazy projects take way longer to complete than the 30 seconds it took you to watch them. Some even feel like you have to be a master carpenter with top-of-the-line power tools to even attempt them.
So, what about all the beginner DIYers? Here some easy home improvement projects you can do today that are not only affordable, but that can also boost the value of your home.
Don’t Leave Thousands at the Door
It may come as a surprise, but the color of your front door can increase your home’s price by thousands of dollars. The door that fetches the highest price is black.
A study conducted by Zillow, the leading real estate website in the United States, showed that real and prospective buyers were willing to pay $6,449 more on average than the typical U.S. home value for a house with a black front door. Slate blue was the most appealing color overall and boosted offer prices from participants by $1,537 more than the average price.
A Fast Fix
Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest differences, and that’s true when it comes to fixtures. Is your showerhead losing pressure? Maybe the faucet is starting to squeak too. It’s time for an upgrade. Changing fixtures is an inexpensive project that is easy to do on your own.
Look for low-flow fixtures. They use less water and heat, saving you a lot of money on your utility bills, plus, they are very desirable to buyers.
A Fresh Coat of Paint
Back with another Zillow study, but this time for interior paint. And once again, bold colors were driving prices up. In a 2023 study, Zillow found that dark gray paint had higher offer prices in every room than white.
According to the study, a charcoal gray kitchen can increase a home’s value by $2,512, while a white kitchen can decrease the value by more than $600. Dark gray paint in bedrooms and living rooms proved just as profitable, outperforming pale neutral colors by potentially commanding prices of $1,755 or more.
A Green Thumbs Up
More people will see the outside of your house than will ever see the inside. Whether they are driving by, walking their dog, or going on a run, the first thing people will likely notice is your front yard. So, landscaping is a great way to improve your home.
According to the National Association of REALTORS®, 92% of realtors suggest sellers improve their home’s curb appeal before they list it for sale. Making sure the yard is well maintained, planting flowers and shrubs to add a pop of color, and edging and mulching beds are easy tasks that will make your home stand out from others on your street.
Lighting Up Your Home’s Price
Simply turning on a light switch will give your home a hike in value. The National Association of Home Builders says that 87% of buyers look for exterior lighting when shopping for a home.
Lighting can accent certain parts of the home’s facade and are an added safety feature that help deter criminals. You can start small by adding some solar-powered lights along your front walkway or changing the fixture on the front porch. Professional light installation will bring the highest-quality curb appeal but will cost a lot more.
